June 21, 2010 begins a new global tradition of regular public participation in creating the societal shift needed for a peaceful and sustainable world. On June 21st, people and groups around the world will collectively take action and publicly proclaim their commitment to serving the common good.
The global launch of WE is a recognition of the interdependence and connection that exists among people, animals and all of life. It is a celebration of our oneness.People are looking for ways to come together locally and globally that can create real change because they can sense the danger we're in as a civilization. They realize that our politicians, our corporate CEOs, our mainstream media and others in power are not sufficiently addressing environmental degradation, the mass extinction of species (as many as 70-100 per day), escalating militarism and violence, the expanding epidemic of poverty, and the continuing marginalization of indigenous peoples worldwide.
WE will connect, mobilize and amplify the efforts of grassroots change agents and their organizations around the world to build political will and make real change.
Why June 21st?
WE launches on June 21st, the summer Solstice, to begin the first of an ongoing series of 3-month long Awareness and Action Campaigns, each focused on an issue of global and local concern. Every WE Campaign begins and culminates on or around one of the Equinoxes or Solstices with a convergence of programs and events. For more on this see the WE Strategy.
Our June 21st launch will be a global celebration promoting the importance of individuals and whole societies making the shift to "WE". On that day, we will begin our first 3-month campaign with the theme: Unity and Peace.
This theme coincides with the activities of thousands of organizations around the world for 11 Days of Global Unity September 11-21 (started by We, The World) and the International Day of Peace Sept. 21st. In fact, the days leading up to and including the June 21st launch are part of an annual 100 day/3-month Countdown to Peace leading to 11 Days and the International Day of Peace Sept. 21st. WE Unity and Peace Campaign June 21st - September 21st
For many people around the world, peace is the central issue that impacts all other issues. The amount of money spent on military, weapons, and war globally is more than three times the total cost of providing adequate food, shelter, clean water and healthcare to everyone on the planet.
Escalating militarism and violence are draining massive amounts of funds, resources and the human spirit needed to address eco-damage, climate change, the mass extinction of species, poverty, and other crises.
The WE Unity and Peace Campaign will support the movement to create a culture of peace. It will expand the annual global activities that take place as part of 11 Days of Global Unity and the International Day of Peace in September.
